Choosing Happy

Finished my cell phone cover for Lilla Rogers Assignment Bootcamp
(for more information go to http://lillarogers.com).  Here is the final
result.  You can find other artist's work from this class by checking out

Designing this involved a few struggles.  There was a bit of idea
overflow and I had to edit.  Originally I was going to create a collage of many
ideas but it looked too busy.  I also followed some great advice from Lilla and
changed my colors to be more bold and updated.
Here's is a print pattern...

I also just put this tree branch design onto a cover.  No cuckoo clocks so I felt
it didn't totally work for the project, but like the more sophisticated, fun feeling.
This was so fun to do.  I put a lot of hours into each piece, so
I definitely will try to market this group.
A little worried my lettering may look a little too
high school girlish, but it kind of works.
Have a happy week!

Good Day!

Stressing a little bit about my first assignment for Lilla Rogers Assignment
Bootcamp.  The inspiration as you may know is cuckoo clocks.  The
item the design is for is a cel phone cover.  I freaked a little hearing this,
thinking it had to be more sophisticated.  Pretty much everything I sketched
was very kid-like and cartoony.  Then I started to think about how many kids
now have phones and even Hello Kitty is popular with young adult girls.
I am just going to have fun with it and try not to worry so much.
I decided to simplify and break down my sketches into different icons.
Here is a little peak into the world of Miss Coo Coo.

There was an option to design a cover on a
template or do sort of a collage of several ideas
with the same theme.  I'm working a collage,
with more icons and words.
It seems to be taking a long time to get anywhere.
So glad we have two weeks to complete!

Going to Bootcamp!

Howdy ya'll!  Monday I got my first mini assignment for the @lillarogers
Make Art That Sells Assignment Bootcamp. (http://www.lillarogers.com/school).
Students are asked to create cuckoo clocks, which is so fun and inspirational!
Here are a few ideas I had.

The main assignment will be given tomorrow.
I believe it will be based on the mini.
I am pretty excited to find out!
I had fun working on these and think
I will work digitally for my final art.  Here is a close up of another.
Have a great night!

Magical Books

  Hello friends,
So, late last night I finished the third illustration for Gnu Story.
(If you are lost go back to early Jan. to see the first and second
illustrations.)  The moment you've been anxiously awaiting...
 The mysterious eyes
behind the door of Magical Books belong to the owner, Mr. Bruce.
Marigold Gnu is intrigued.  "I suppose I shall apply..."
I first rendered this with water soluble pencil.  I filled in color with
watercolor pencils.  It was a bit tricky being confined to limited pencil colors,
but I think it also forced me to work outside my comfort zone.  The colors
do seem to work for the look I was trying to achieve.
Things I'm not too sure about...the shadows are a little askew.  Does this
work since there is indoor lighting and lighting coming from behind
Marigold (projecting her shadow)?  Also, it appears we are looking down
on Mr. Bruce.  Does this perspective make him seem a little less intimidating
or does the viewer feel Marigold must be 8 feet tall?   Hmmm, how tall are
gnus or wildebeests (correct spelling, I checked!) as they are also named?
There is so much going on right now in my life.  I apologize for being all
over the place.  I am excited and sort of nervous about starting the Lilla Rogers
Assignment Bootcamp.  Look here to find out more...

Who knows where this will lead?   I am confident it
will help me tremendously.   Concentrating on my style and producing
portfolio work will be a very good thing.
I would like to post my work from the class so I am not sure where Gnu
Story is going to fit in to this schedule.  I may just illustrate bits here and there
then put the whole story on another site.  Still thinking things through.
Have a great week and read a book!
